How to hide control panel icons in windows

7/01/2009 07:03:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
If you want to hide certain control panel icons, you can easily do it by editing the control.ini file.
The control.ini file is present in the c:/windows.
Just open the file.

Initially the control.ini file will be empty.

If you want to hide a control panel icon in control panel, just add the

[don't load] tag followed by the name of the control panel file and then save the file.
For example :
[don't load]
access.cpl=no
The above will hide the accessibility options from control panel.
You can re enable the icon file by removing the corresponding line if you have multiple entries.
You can search for all the files with the extension .cpl, to know the names of the control panel file which you want to hide, using the control.ini file.
Note that you will have to reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

How to Remove Happy99.exe (ska)

6/22/2009 09:32:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »

These are the steps you can follow to remove Happy99.exe

Steps marked optional are not absolutely necessary and are completely safe to skip. If you’re not comfortable with DOS, get someone knowledgeable to help you with this. I cannot make guarantees of perfect safety since its a manual removal, Perform these at your own risk. If you have Windows NT, you don’t have to follow the removal steps.

1. Click Start, then Shut Down, then “Restart Computer in MS-DOS mode”, then click Yes. It’s important to exit Windows in order to be able to replace the file WSOCK32.DLL which Windows normally has in use.

2.At the DOS prompt type this exactly and press enter at the end of each line:

CD \WINDOWS\SYSTEM

3. Delete SKA.EXE and SKA.DLL by typing

DEL SKA.EXE
DEL SKA.DLL

If you get “File not found” you’re either not infected or in the wrong directory. Make sure you’re in your Windows System directory; check to see if you followed step 2 exactly.

4.Copy WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL by typing

ATTRIB -R WSOCK32.DLL
COPY WSOCK32.SKA WSOCK32.DLL

Answer “Yes” if it asks if you want to overwrite WSOCK32.DLL.

WSOCK32.SKA is a backup of the original WSOCK32.DLL. You are replacing the modified DLL with the original. If you get a “Sharing violation” make sure you followed step 1.

5.Optional Delete WSOCK32.SKA by typing

DEL WSOCK32.SKA

You can leave WSOCK32.SKA on your system. It is a copy of your original WSOCK32.DLL Do not delete WSOCK32.SKA if you are unable to replace WSOCK32.DLL with WSOCK32.SKA.

6.Return to Windows by typing

EXIT

7.Optional Delete Windows Registry Key.
Click Start, then Run, then type regedit in the text box, then click OK. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then Software, then Microsoft, then Windows, then CurrentVersion. Under RunOnce check for SKA.EXE and select it if it is there. Press delete and then click Yes. Close Regedit. Don’t change anything else without making a backup of the registry first. If you don’t find SKA.EXE in the registry, it doesn’t mean you’re not infected. SKA.EXE is only added to the registry if HAPPY99.EXE is unable to modify WSOCK32.DLL when you run it. Also, you’ll only find it in the registry if you haven’t rebooted since you ran HAPPY99.EXE.

8.Optional Choose Start, Programs, Accessories, Notepad, choose File, then Open then type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LISTE.SKA in the File Name box. Warn the people on the list, then delete LISTE.SKA. Make it clear to the people you warn that they won’t be infected unless they ran happy99.exe, to avoid alarming them unnecessarily. If you haven’t sent out any infected e-mails, there won’t be a LISTE.SKA.

9. Optional Delete the HAPPY99.EXE file. The location of HAPPY99.EXE will vary depending on where you saved it. You can delete it simply by dragging it to the Recycle Bin from within Windows or whatever method you prefer. You may still have some messages with HAPPY99.EXE attached in your mailbox. These cannot do anything unless you run them. You can delete them if you want to or just ignore them. 10.Optional If you aren’t sure whether WSOCK32.DLL is infected, choose Start, then Find, then “Files or Folders”. Then type WSOCK32.DLL in the “Named” box. In the “Look in” box choose drive C: or whatever drive you have Windows on. In the “Containing Text” box type “ska.dll” without the quotes. Then click “Find Now”. If you don’t find any files, that means that wsock32.dll isn’t the modified version. If you don’t have the modified WSOCK32.DLL, the virus has no way to attach to e-mails, even if you have SKA.EXE, SKA.DLL, and WSOCK32.SKA in the Windows System folder. If you have SKA.EXE in the RunOnce registry section, and you haven’t deleted SKA.EXE, then the virus will try to modify WSOCK32.DLL the next time you restart the computer.

How to remove SCVHOST.exe (W32/YahLover.Worm.gen or Win32/Autorun.R.worm)

6/22/2009 08:53:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »

This virus/worm installs itself in autorun.inf and once double click it will spread itself unto your system. Furthermore, it copies itself through all the shared folders on your computers throughout the network and installs itself in the registry entries remotely.

Here are indication that your computer is infected with this virus.

  • This virus/worm blocks the task manager
The worm changes the registry to prevent running task manager and editing registry for harder detection.
  • It automatically restarts the computer when you try to go to the command prompt.
  • It duplicates itself to different locations of the shared folders. The duplicated virus/worm uses a FOLDER icon with an .exe file extension. WARNING! DO NOT double click these folders.
  • It autostart via registry keys Windows->Run and add itself to WinNT->WinLogon->Explorer.exe

How to remove the virus

You can use NOD32 or any strong antovirus programs to remove this virus but if you don’t have a anti-virus or your antivirus can’t remove this virus try following the steps below to remove it manually.

  • Boot your system in Safe Mode Command Prompt Only
  • After you log-in the command prompt will be opened (LOG-IN AS ADMINISTRATOR).
  • Type CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 (I assume that your Windows System files are located at Drive C)
  • Type DIR /ah, this will display all hidden files on this directory folder. You will see the following files which is used by the virus to spread itself: AUTORUN.INI, BLASTCLNNN.EXE, and SCVHOST.EXE
  • Type ATTRIB -H -R -S SCVHOST.EXE
  • Type ATTRIB -H -R -S BLASTCLNNN.EXE
  • Type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INI
  • Type DEL SCVHOST.EXE
  • Type DEL BLASTCLNNNN.EXE
  • Type DEL AUTORUN.INI
  • Type CD\
  • Type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INF
  • Type DEL AUTORUN.INF

After following the steps on removing the virus/worm files, the virus should now be removed from the registry of your system.

  • At the command prompt type REGEDIT and press ENTER key. This will run the Registry Editor
  • From the registry, look for the keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, you will see an entry Yahoo! Messengger (it’s spelled like this) with a value c:\windows\system32\scvhost.exe, Delete this entry.
  • Look again for the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, there’s an entry named: SHELL, it has a value = Explorer.exe SCVHOST.EXE , DON’T delete this entry!!! Just edit this entry and REMOVE the SCVHOST.EXE so that Explorer.exe will be the only value that remains from this registry entry.

After carefully following all the steps restart your computer on normal mode and the virus should now be gone.

Reasons to a Computer Restart itself Automatically

6/22/2009 06:09:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
Might you your computer have facing this and the sound is annoyed. If the computer restart itself as a habit randomly or a in a time cycle then that could be done by malicious virus inside your system

  • A virus:
You need to make your computer virus guard up to date and make sure the virus program working properly . Also you need to be assuring that the antivirus program hefty enough for beating at least 99% viruses.

Here I’m trying to consolidate several reasons for a computer restart itself without knowing the user.

  • Downloaded updates need to install
A computer can be restart because automatically downloaded an update package needs install its updates and work out this by itself restarting the computer. Probably these could be malicious programs.

  • Overheating:
Overheating of the parts also cause for this kind of matter. In fact the proper response of a computer to overheating is the power off. Nothing is gained by restarting. However overheating could cause the BIOS or power supply to malfunction causing it to restart.

You can improve the airflow through the machine or invest in a water-cooling system. These are favored by gamers, who put a lot of stress on machines heating them up.

  • Microsoft Auto Update:
Microsoft Auto Update can force a reboot to the after countdown (Many pc's are set to do this at 3am by default) if the update requires a dll reload/change.

  • Remotely Shutdown:
Also someone can use shutdown -i which is a command to remotely shutdown a computer all they would need is an IP address (Internet protocol Address).

Dynamic IP Address vs Static IP Address

6/22/2009 06:03:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet. It is the unique identifier of a computer on the net.

A dynamic IP is an address that is assigned your computer temporarily by ISP when you connect to the internet

For the duration of you connected it will remain the same IP address but when you disconnect and reconnect you will probably be given a new (different) IP address. The IP address you had before will be given to someone else.

A static IP address is an IP address that is assigned to you computer by an Internet service provider (ISP) to be its permanent address on the Internet. Every time you’re connected the same IP address will be assigned.

If you need to make your dynamic IP address into static IP probably you have to contact your ISP (Internet service provider) and ask them for assign you a static IP. So you can have an IP address permanently assigned to you which you can use every time you are connected.

Making your IP address static cannot done yourself because an IP address needs to be globally unique, you can't just pick one for yourself as you desire. It needs to be assigned to you by your ISP.

  • Advantages of having Dynamic IP:
1. If you have a hole in your firewall and a dynamic IP, then every time you disconnect and reconnect any hacker who found you by your IP address on the first visit, will much more difficult to find you again because your address will be different.

2. Fixing IP bans from Forums, chartrooms and etc.

3. Override Time limitations which are depend on the IP address (I.e. Rapidshare).

  • Advantages of having Static IP:
The only reason I know why you would need a static IP is if you want other users to be able to connect to your computer through internet. (I.e: Web server)

How to edit a (.PPS or .PPSX) PowerPoint Show file

6/20/2009 06:02:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
PowerPoint Show file! Heard about that?
Yes, it is the file with a .pps extension that plays the PowerPoint slideshow. Since it runs the slideshow directly, you don't get the option of editing the file from the PowerPoint environment.

However, with a small tweak you can easily edit the content in the PowerPoint Show file.

1. Let's assume you have a powerpoint show named "Life.pps" which needs to be modified.

2. All you have to do is change(or rename) the extension of the file from .pps to .ppt.
(Note: To display the file extensions of file types, in Windows Explorer go to Tools >> Folder Options >> View and uncheck the "Hide file extensions of known file types" checkbox.)

3. So, "Life.pps" should be made "Life.ppt".

4. Clicking the "Life.ppt" file will open it in the PowerPoint environment and can be easily edited.

This tweak can also be applied the other way around when you want to make a PowerPoint Slideshow (.pps) from a PowerPoint presentation document (.ppt).

Cool Mozilla Firefox Tricks.

6/19/2009 01:15:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box

2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

* Spacebar (page down)
* Shift-Spacebar (page up)
* Ctrl+F (find)
* Alt-N (find next)
* Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
* Ctrl+T (new tab)
* Ctrl+K (go to search box)
* Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
* Ctrl+= (increase text size)
* Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-W (close tab)
* F5 (reload)
* Alt-Home (go to home page)

4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
* Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)

6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:

* Middle click on link (opens in new tab)

7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.

Cool User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.

9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.

10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.

11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.

12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:

* Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
* Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:

* 0 Display a close button on the active tab only
* 1 Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
* 2 Don’t display any close buttons
* 3 Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

6/19/2009 12:52:00 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
Ever you thought to backup your important files in a separate storage media device? May be you need another separate device for store some files other than backup. Gmail Drive will be the best solution. Gmail offer 7.10GB space for its account holders. What is Gmail driver doing is allow us to use this space as a storage media. In another word it supplies an interface for dealing with that free space easily.

GMail Drive adds a new drive to the computer under the My Computer folder, where your hard drive portions exist. With the interface supplies by the Gmail Driver we can easily copy and drag and drop files to the Gmail space. Literally GMail Drive is a shell extension tool that creates a virtual file system in a computer.

First you need to download Gmail Driver From here (Freeware)

And install it to your system as you normally deal with any software.

Right after you install Gmail Driver you can notice a new icon appears at under “MY COMPUTER“ folder named "GMail Drive"

Right click on it and select "Login As" and in the appeared window enter your Gmail account information to login to your account.

Right after login to your account you can deal with your newly installed store device as you normally deal physical hardware device.
  • Advantages:
  1. Free space we don’t need to pay for it.
  2. It’s possible to use any amount of accounts, in other word unlimited space.
  • Disadvantages:
  1. It’s taking time to upload and download files, slow internet users can get more benefit from this.
  2. Only the person, owner of the account can deal with uploaded files (files can’t download through a specified url)

Note:

All files you copied into the drive you newly created with Gmail Drive are store at your Gmail account. When ever you login to your account with your browser you can notice all those files are appear in your account as newly received mails.

Also you can use 2, 3 or any much email accounts as store media devices.

Trick to Name a New Folder with name "CON"

6/17/2009 12:55:00 PM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »

Do you know that you cannot create a folder or file named "CON"(without the quotes) anywhere on

your PC.If you don't yet know about this go forward and try it yourself.Try creating a folder named

"CON"(without the quotes) anywhere on your hard disk and i am sure you wont be able to do so.

But the bigger challenge is this one !!!

Just copy from here "СON" (without the quotes) and rename your folder then paste.Yes you will be successful now!!!Isn't that strange.

If you write this somewhere else and copy it from there, it wont work.This is the magic.

Reason:The reason is that i am using Unicode.Instead of 67 as the ASCII code of C ,in the unicode,its code is 1057.That is why i am able to make a folder by this name.
